BarCamp in a Nutshell

Barcamps emerged in the techy- & start-up sector and offer the best of two worlds, combining interaction and focus on up-to-date topics of immediate interest to participants. It creates enriching discussion guided by everyone participating!

Here’s how it works:

  • Participants are invited to host sessions of their interest, based on a (hopefully engaging) brief pitch to the full audience. Whether they are recognized experts, interested in collecting diverse insights or simply want to enhance awareness on a subject – all topics (politics, academics, general public interest, MHC profile, technology, whatever you can think of!) can all run in parallel.
  • Session-hosts will each deliver a 1(!) minute pitch for “their” topic – the audience then “documents” (general) interest (by raising hand) – but this is not yet a “commitment” to attend the later session.
  • The most popular 8-10 sessions will then be selected to run in parallel slots in two rounds, with the top 2 topics running consecutively.
  • The audience is invited to actively participate in each session, but everyone is free to “vote by feet”, i.e. walk in / out of sessions as they please. If a session is boring / not what one expected, people can walk in and out / move on to another one, so hosts will have to deal with the fluidity of their audience.
  • The moderator will “warn” session participants approximately 2 minutes before the end of the slot – giving hosts a chance to wrap up. During the 10 minutes break, people can regroup to start the 2nd round.
  • At the end of the BarCamp, session hosts are invited to deliver a (very) brief feedback to the plenum – and later to provide key insights on the MHC European Symposium website.
