Why is this recipe great? What’s its backstory?

This a traditional Chinese recipe which is easy to replicate even outside of China.

Coca Cola Chicken Wings

Serves 4. Takes approx. 30 minutes.

Ingredients:

  • Chicken wings *10
  • Green onions – a small bunch – sliced
  • Ginger slice
  • Soy sauce
  • Vegetable Oil
  • Cola *300 ml
  • Star Anise (Not Necessary) *2

Instructions:

Boil the chicken wings and cool them down.

Add some oil in a frying pan and heat it up (use the highest thermal power). You know when the oil   is hot enough when it starts smoking lightly, you can also test by feeling it, but watch out for your fingers!

Reduce the heat from high into medium high and put chicken wings in the pan. Fry them until both sides are a little crispy.  Add the green onions, ginger slices, and star anise into the pan and keep frying (don’t make them stick to the pan).

Add some soy sauce (ca. 1 teaspoon) to the chicken.  Soy sauce gives the chicken wings a nice color and a little salty taste. So add “some” but not too much, depending on your taste.  If you do not have soy sauce, note that more cola would give the chicken nice color as well (but make it sweeter).

After the soy sauce you can add the Cola, which should just cover the chicken wings. You can continue to cook at medium high heat, turning to medium once the liquid starts to boil.  Cover the pan with a lid if you have too much smoke. Add ½ teaspoon sea salt once the liquid has dried up.

Put the chicken wings in a nice platter, decorate with sesame seeds en enjoy!

  • Note: some people change use beer instead of Coca Cola – the cooking steps remain the same and the chicken wings taste equally delicious!
