A Message from the Class of 2010 Class Board

“Every generation of Black people, up until now, has had to face the reality that no matter how hard we work we will probably not see the end of racism in our lifetimes. Yet many of us keep the faith and try to do all we can to make change now.” — Barbara Smith, in the introduction of “Home Girls: A Black Feminist Anthology” (1983)

These words from Barbara Smith ’69 – groundbreaking author, activist, and co-founding member of the Combahee River Collective – were written almost 40 years ago. Though the 1980s often feel very distant from us living in 2020, our nation continues to struggle with the same deeply entrenched anti-Black racism. It permeates all aspects of our society and manifests in how we build our cities, construct our laws, and engage with one another.

Your class board feels strongly in stating that Black Lives Matter. That the lives of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Aubrey, Tony McDade, Nina Pop, and thousands of other victims of police violence and racially-motivated hatred matter. The events of the last few weeks, and in reality the events of the last 400+ years, have caused irreparable harm to Black communities throughout the US and globally.

Honoring and attempting to heal this harm will not happen overnight and, as a board of volunteers, we know that our contributions will be limited to what is within our control. Luckily, we, as a class, do have control over who serves on this board, how we prioritize our class goals, and how we engage with Mount Holyoke at-large and hold the school accountable. Over the next few days, we’re going to share some of the issues that came up in our class meeting this last weekend — specifically around diversity, inclusion, and leveraging our resources.

Together, we will find a path forward for how we can make meaningful change now and in the future.

Mount Holyoke College Class of 2010 Class Board — June 10, 2020

Joanna Arcieri, 2010 Communications Coordinator

Joanna Arcieri

What are you up to now? I am a communications consultant in Jersey City. I work for small businesses, restaurants, and political campaigns.

You should email me if you have questions/comments about anything related to film, social media, video production, graphic design, and website design. Anything at all!

Responsibilities: The class Communications Coordinator is responsible for creating, maintaining, and updating the class website or other class social media.

What was your favorite place at MHC? The Mount Holyoke News newsroom. I practically lived there!

If you could go on a date with a historical figure, who would it be? John Huston. Because once he and Errol Flynn got into brawl over Olivia de Haviland and I would want to be there when it happens.

How do you plan to prepare for the zombie apocalypse? Store up on Xanax because I’ll want to be well-medicated during all zombie attacks.

Hillary Ossip

What was your favorite class at MHC? I can’t pick just one favorite, but two classes that forever changed my understanding of the world around me were Visualizing Cultures with Debbora Battaglia and History, Memory and Forgetting with Andy Lass.

What was your favorite place at MHC? Again, it’s hard to pick just one, but perhaps Skinner Green. On a warm spring day there is nowhere I’d rather be.

What is your favorite MHC tradition? Laurel Parade, because it serves as such a strong reminder that the Mount Holyoke community lives on beyond graduation, and that we carry our experiences during our time at Mount Holyoke with us throughout our lives.

What are you up to now: I’m currently working at the Office of Admission for our alma mater!

What was your favorite place at MHC? The outdoor track. Practices were painful, but that’s where I met my best friends.

If you could change your name, what would you change it and why? I’ve always liked the name Isabel; it has a nice ring to it.

How do you plan to prepare for the zombie apocalypse? Hopefully I’ll be dead by then so I won’t have to deal with it.

Nikki Chambers, 2010 Treasurer

Nikki ChambersName: Nikki Chambers

Major: History

Hometown: Montclair, NJ

What are you up to now? I am working at the MLB Network and running as much as I can.

You should email me if you have questions/comments about the sports industry, running, or anything at all.

Responsibilities: The treasurer maintains permanent, accurate records of all class funds and  transfers them to her successor at the end of her term. She establishes and maintains the bank account, completes and submits an Annual Financial Report to the Alumnae Association each year and collects dues authorized by the class. Additionally, she records and promptly deposits all receipts, pays all bills approved by the class president, reconciles bank statements on a monthly basis, sends financial reports to the president at least every six months and attends class board meetings or provides written accounting reports.

What was your favorite class at MHC? America’s Fiction: Lost and Found. This class was all about exploring 20th Century literature that was either never given the praise it deserved when it was initially published or was praised during its time, but not given much attention since. We had the absolute best people in that class and our discussions were always amazing and thought provoking. Three hours went by so quickly!

What was your favorite place at MHC? I love every inch of Mount Holyoke’s library. The atrium is always alive and bustling, yet can be quiet during the right time (mornings and night time). I also have a lot of fond memories from the reading room.

What is your favorite MHC tradition? The Laurel Parade is probably my favorite tradition at MHC. It’s so moving—seeing all of the alumnae dressed in white, carrying the laurel, and paying homage to the current graduates of MHC and to the women’s suffragist movement. I can’t watch the parade without crying.

Laura Bernstein, 2010 Secretary

LBernstein

Name: Laura Bernstein

Major: International Relations

Hometown:  St. Petersburg, FL

What are you up to now? Living in Midtown Manhattan, working as a customs and international trade specialist for petrochemical importers, and taking advantage of the delicious Georgian food options out in Brooklyn

Class Board Responsibilities: The duties of the Secretary include, but are not limited to taking minutes at all class and officer meetings, archiving a copy of the minutes for class records, distributing class notices, posters, and other information.  She will also compose and distribute a per semester newsletter to the class, keep in contact with all of the class representatives and maintain the class website.

You should email me if you have questions/comments about: Whatever!  Moving/visiting NYC, getting into the energy industry, and Georgia (the country!)

What was your favorite class at MHC and why?  History and Politics of the Republic of Georgia and Oil and Water Don’t Mix, both with Stephen Jones.  These two courses introduced me to the man who would become my mentor, the country that would become my second home, and the industry that I would make my career in.

What was your favorite place at MHC and why?  A tie between Thirsty Mind and Upper Lake.  The perfect pairing of productivity and peace at MHC.

What is your favorite MHC tradition?  Laurel Parade.  It’s a reminder of the legacy we are privileged to be a part of as Mount Holyoke alums and I bawl every time at the magnitude of it all.

If Hollywood made a movie about your life, who would you want to play you and why?  I like to think it’d be a tag team effort between Reese Witherspoon and Meryl Streep.  The former for my young, fun, glamorous years and the later for once I’ve reached Margaret Thatcher-level achievement.  They’re both spunky and fun, but tough and determined.

What song best describes your life?  “Carolina in my Mind” by James Taylor

Cathy Pedrayes, 2010 Communications Coordinator

Name: Catherina (Cathy) Pedrayes

Major: Environmental Studies

Hometown: Miami, FL

You should email me if you have questions/comments about: Anything! I do get a lot of questions when people are moving to NYC though.

What was your favorite class at MHC and why? Women & Environments with Giovanna Di Chiro. Any class she taught was amazing but that was one of my favorites and probably the most useful as I still refer to the readings we did in that class today. Second favorite was Rocks & Minerals with Steve Dunn because when I got engaged I was able to check that it was a real diamond.

What was your favorite place at MHC and why? Clapp is where I spent most of my time and I still fall in love every time I see the rocks & mineral collection.

What is your favorite MHC tradition and why? M&C’s Of course! Mostly when we had cookies or brownies but I still loved filling up on whip cream when we didn’t.

Elizabeth DuMont-McCaffrey, 2010 Vice President

Name: Elizabeth “Biff” DuMont-McCaffrey

Major: Politics

Hometown: Amherst, MA

What are you up to now?  I work in the Office of Admission at MHC.

Responsibilities: Vice Presidents work closely with the president and take over presidential responsibilities, if necessary. Specific duties for this office may include: chairing reunion, organizing mini-reunions, being a contact with Mount Holyoke class daughters and/or with class honoraries, promoting mini-reunions and class activities, or class outreach. She may also be asked to share in the responsibility of writing a class letter.

You should email me if you have questions/comments about upcoming reunions, organizing mini-reunions,  class outreach or new initiatives you want for the class of 2010.

What was your favorite class at MHC and why? Arabic with Professor Jiyad.

What is your favorite MHC tradition and why? Mountain Day!  As an international student recruiter, I love being in other countries on Mountain Day and climbing mountains with groups of super excited alumnae.

If you could change your name, what would you change it to? Ebenezer Choo.

If Hollywood made a movie about your life, who would you want to play you? Samuel L Jackson.  We have similar personalities and both enjoy wearing unusual wigs.

How will you prepare for the zombie apocalypse?  I won’t.  I’m a dead sexy zombie.

Maureen McVeigh, 2010 Nominating Committee

Name: Maureen McVeighMajor: Art History and Italian

Hometown: Cranston, Rhode Island

What are you up to now?  I’m happily back in the Valley! I’m a Masters candidate in Art History at UMass Amherst.

Responsibilities: The Nominating Committee selects candidates for elective class officers and submits an official slate for class elections. The only additional nominations that can be considered for any given office are those made from the floor at the time of the election at the class meeting. You should email me if you have questions/comments about: How and why to run for class board positions!

What is your favorite MHC tradition and why? Laurel Parade is by far my favorite tradition. It’s absolutely amazing and inspiring to witness the continuity of the Mount Holyoke spirit and the many different ways every single one of us will always be a “Mount Holyoke Woman.” I’ll probably never stop tearing up at “Bread and Roses”.

If you could go on a date with a historical figure, who would it be and why? Gian Lorenzo Bernini, the Baroque sculptor and architect. I’ll admit that my mental image of him comes from a BBC series on art, but it’s obvious that he was passionate, confident, and incredibly talented. You only need to look at his “Ecstasy of St. Theresa” to know that he understood women. I think one date would be enough, though– see Constanza Bonarelli as a cautionary tale.

How do you plan to prepare for the zombie apocalypse? I’ll take the advice someone very wise once gave me: camp out in a Super Walmart.

Aviva Elzufon, 2010 Scribe

Name: Aviva Elzufon

Major: Spanish and Latin American Studies

Hometown: Wilmington, DE

What are you up to now? Graduate Student at Indiana University

What was your favorite place at MHC and why? My favorite place at MHC is the walk around upper lake because  of its beauty.

What is your favorite MHC tradition and why? My favorite MHC tradition is Mountain Day.  I wish they could implement in in the real world.

If you could go on a date with a historical figure, who would it be and why? Definitely Alexander Hamilton.  To quote Lin-Manuel Miranda, “He was born a penniless orphan in St. Croix of illegitimate birth who became George Washington’s right hand man, became treasury secretary, caught beef with every other founding father – and all on the strength of his writing.”
