Happy 217th Mary Lyon!

Happy 217th Birthday to Mary Lyon!

Celebrate with a Deacon Porter’s Hat: A traditional dessert at Mount Holyoke, served on Mary Lyon’s birthday.

Yield:  6 to 8 servings

Steam:  2 hours

1 c. shortening      1 c. buttermilk (or sour milk)

1 c. molasses          2 c. flour

1/2 tsp. baking soda        1/2 tsp. cinnamon

1/2 tsp. nutmeg               1/2 tsp. ground cloves

1/4 c. raisins

Melt the shortening, add molasses and buttermilk.  Sift together flour, soda and spices.  Combine with molasses mixture.  Add raisins.  The resulting batter should be stiff.  If it is not, add more flour, one tablespoon at a time.  Turn into buttered, on quart mold (a one pound coffee can may be used; or recipe maybe doubled and a two-pound can used; for individual servings, use six or eight ounce frozen juice cans and fill two-thirds full).  Fill mold half full.  Cover tightly.  A double layer of aluminum foil tied with string may be used.  Set on a rack in a large kettle, pouring of water to half the depth of the mold.  Cover kettle tightly.  Bring to boil on top of stove.  When steam begins to escape, reduce heat to low and steam for two hour.  Serve with Foamy Sauce.

Foamy Sauce:

2 thickly beaten egg yolks          1/2 c. brandy

1/4 c. sugar      1/2 c. pint heavy cream.

Slowly beat sugar and brandy into egg yolks.  Just before serving, whip the cream and fold it into the egg mixture.

Class of 2004 Nominating Committee Needs Your Input

As we get ready for our tenth reunion in May 2014, it is time to begin the process of finding new members for our 2014-2019 class board. That is where we need your help! I am writing to you as part of our class nominating committee. Kate Hill, Jeannie Curry, Anne Scott, Aileen Beltran, and I (Becky McNealy) have volunteered to put together the slate of candidates for positions on our class executive committee (class board). The election will take place during the class meeting at our ten-year reunion.
We will vote to fill the following positions:
President: Leads the class board and the class, and is the main and personal link between individual classmates, the class, and the Alumnae Association.
Vice President (possible Co-Reunion Chair): Takes over presidential responsibilities, if necessary, and could serve as one of the co-reunion chairs.
Secretary/Web Coordinator: Leads the executive committee in the preparation of the class newsletter and other class letters and publications, and is responsible for preserving class records, keeping minutes of class meetings, and retaining the meeting minutes book. Also oversees the class’s presence on the web (creating, managing, and updating the content of the class website and Facebook group).
Treasurer: Maintains business-like records of all class funds, manages the class checkbook, oversees fundraising, and reports to the Alumnae Association on financial matters.
Reunion Chairs (two positions): Oversee the reunion committee, lead the planning of reunion activities.
Head Class Agents (two positions): Responsible for the class’s contribution to the Mount Holyoke Fund each year, and motivating and managing class agents and giving activities.
Class Scribes (two positions): Gather, verify, and prepare class news items, and forward information to the Mount Holyoke Alumnae Quarterly notes staff person four times a year.
To express interest in running or to nominate a member of our class for one of these positions, please email Becky McNealy. In your nomination, please include current contact information and a short blurb about what you would bring to the position that you are interested in.
The current members of our executive committee have asked me to pass on that they are happy to be contacted to answer any questions about these responsibilities and about their experiences on class board.
I look forward to hearing from you!
