Why is this recipe great? What’s its backstory?

This recipe has been in my Italian American family for generations. When the smell fills my kitchen, I know that Christmas has arrived!!

Christmas Pizza

Serves 20. Takes approx. 2 hours.

Ingredients:

Dough
5 cups flour
5 tsp baking powder
½ cup sugar
1 cup shortening
5 beaten eggs
½ tsp salt

Filling
Sugar, Cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, chopped walnuts, raisins (soaked two hours in water- then drained well), vegetable oil

Instructions:

Sift dry ingredients

Cut in shortening

Add beaten eggs and enough milk to make a soft dough.

Kneed lightly and roll out one piece at a time. Line pie plate with a full piece of dough. Spread oil on each piece, sprinkle with sugar, cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg (I mix all of these together), chopped walnuts and raisins.

Assemble pizza according to the photos.

Bake at 325 F for one hour

Should make three “pizzas”
