45th Reunion Book Club (Virtual and In-Person) – May 27 3-4 pm Virtually and In-Person

Thanks to all who expressed interest in our 45th Reunion Book Club. The votes are in and Lee Kravetz’s debut novel, The Last Confessions of Sylvia P., is the winner! The reviews suggest that this will be enjoyed by Plath aficionados as well as those who aren’t her biggest fans! Adam Johnson (Pulitzer Prize winner) writes, “Lee Kravetz has created a bit of a miracle, a plot-driven literary puzzle box whose mystery lives in both its winding approach to history and its wonderous [sic] story. It’s a book full of ideas about inspiration and a love for language that translates across borders, physical and generational.”

Join classmates either in person or on zoom to discuss this seductive literary mystery incorporating the perspectives of Plath’s psychiatrist, a rival poet and, years later, a curator of antiquities. Even if this was not your first choice, please consider giving it a try. No problem if you didn’t vote, sign up now!

MHC Class of ’77 Reunion Golf Outing

The MHC Class of ’77 is planning a golf outing at the reunion on Friday, May 27 at the Orchards!  Everyone is invited and welcome!

Currently, we have two foursomes…some classmates want to chip and putt, and some classmates want to do the best ball format.  Then lunch at the Orchards restaurant—if you want to skip the golf and meet us at the 19th hole around noon that would be great too!!

The College will allow us to check into our dorm on Thursday evening, for an additional charge of course. (brekkie is available on Friday morning).

If you’d like additional details or to join us, please contact Nancy Mathiasen 914.548.8539 (cell) or Nancy.Mathiasen@verizon.net

The Countdown has Begun to our 45th reunion!

The countdown has begun! Our 45th reunion is less than four months away. We hope many of you already have the dates marked on your calendar and are as excited for the reunion as your Reunion Committee. If you are still undecided, hopefully this letter will convince you that South Hadley is the place to be May 27-29, 2022!

Reunion Plans

The weekend always provides countless opportunities to re-engage with the campus, classmates and the larger Mount Holyoke community. There’s time to stroll around enjoying our campus in springtime splendor while experiencing the peace and tranquility of Upper Lake, marveling at the Chihuly sculpture in the Williston library or exploring Blanchard Campus Center. The schedule provides time to engage with classmates from college days as well as form new connections with classmates you may not have known. There’s something for everyone! In addition to class social hour activities, we are planning a golf outing on Friday morning and bird watching on Sunday morning.

In reality, what is going to make this reunion a great one is YOUR attendance. If you haven’t already, contact some friends and start making your plans. Don’t miss this opportunity to experience Mount Holyoke College!

Registration and Scholarships

The college has made some changes since our last reunion. Online registration will begin on March 8th.  You will notice that there have been changes to the overall cost of Reunion to make it more accessible for everyone. Our class will continue to offer financial help for classmates who may find it difficult to attend the reunion this year.

For confidential help, please contact Luisa Tavares in the Alumnae Office, 413-538-2201 or ltavares@mtholyoke.edu.

This reunion, all meals will be served in the dining commons allowing us to have a taste of the student experience and meet alumnae from other classes.

Finally, Mount Holyoke will continue to update COVID-19 Information at https://www.mtholyoke.edu/opening-gates/guest-and-visitor-policy.

Supporting Mount Holyoke

Each year, gifts to the Mount Holyoke Fund support scholarship aid, internship and research opportunities, athletics, academic programming and more.  Have YOU donated yet? This donation is a wonderful way to honor the difference Mount Holyoke made in your life. So far, 23% of our classmates have donated and we’re hoping to get to 45% in honor of our 45th reunion.  A generous total of nearly $143k has been donated towards our dollar amount goal of $300,000. Another great time to donate is coming up with the March4MHC event on March 3/4 this year. That is a challenging event with a chance to earn additional award dollars for our class total. Details will be coming soon from our class agents.

Virtual Mini-Reunion Events Coming Up

As we look forward to longer, warmer days your class has planned three virtual events guaranteed to have all of us excited for the reunion! Please consider joining us for one or more of these events even if you can’t attend the reunion this year! The first will be a virtual trivia night on February 27th. Our host will handle all the logistics and all you need to do is show up with the beverage of your choice and have a good time. The second event is designed for all you “want to be” makers out there. Simonne Roy will virtually lead us in creating a watercolor scene of the Williston Reading Room. Her depth of knowledge is translating to a no-fail experience for the rest of us. Sign up for both events can be found on our class website https://new.alumnae.mtholyoke.edu/1977/ as well as on our class Facebook page  https://www.facebook.com/groups/469659729718169. Suzanne Berry Duncan has organized a Knit Along project that’s accessible to all knitting levels! She has even found an MHC-owned knit shop for ordering the yarn at a discount! Please email Suzanne directly at sbduncan55@gmail.com to join this group.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the reunion, please contact one of the Reunion Chairs – Janet Connell or Susan Colgan by clicking here. We can’t wait to see you!

With warmest regards,

Janet and Susan

Mini-Reunion: KAL (Knit A-Long) lead by Sue Beery Duncan

Here is another exciting mini-reunion that we are able to offer, with the leadership of one of our classmates, Sue Beery Duncan.

Sue is hoping that you will join her for a KAL (Knit ALong) over the next 3 months.  The group will knit the same pattern, meeting 4 times (or more if we want to) via Zoom to share our questions, show our work and reconnect before our 45th reunion in May. The pattern (Purl Soho’s Striped Triangle Garter Wrap) is straightforward so you do not need to be an expert knitter for this project, and even if you are coming back to knitting or just learning to knit, we hope you will join us.

The tentative schedule for our Zoom meetings, all at 7 pm (and meetings will be recorded.) are:

  • March 3: Cast-on Party! Over the four weeks let’s work on sections 1 and 2
  • March 31: Get together, chat, discuss our knitting; try to finish section 2 and begin section 3 before the April meeting
  • April 28: Hopefully we are all working on section 4, and we can talk about reunion activities
  • May 19: We’ll discuss some different binding-off techniques to provide an elastic edge as well as blocking
  • Reunion Weekend: We can meet in our reunion dorm and share our work in person.

The pattern is free and Purl Soho sells the suggested yarn. (Feel free to use any yarn you want so long as it gives you the right gauge.)  Sue reached out to Purl Soho, telling them she was planning a KAL for our class reunion and asked if they might offer us a discount.  It turns out that the CEO, Joelle Hoverson, is an MHC grad (Class of ’89) and she’s thrilled to hear about our KAL and 45th reunion.  Purl Soho will be offering us a discounted price once we know how many people will be purchasing yarn.

So if you want to join or ask some questions, please send Sue Beery Duncan an email (sbduncan55@gmail.com) by February 15. And just as an FYI, I don’t know how to knit but everyone seems to love it, so your fearless President will be signing up too!

Wine in the Reading Room!? Yes! Laugh and talk too!
