Return to Class Histories

20th Reunion History – 1997

On our first day at Mount Holyoke, the class of 1977 made history.  We arrived 627 strong, the largest freshmen class ever admitted!  This over-enrollment squeezed 60 of us into temp doubles in the basement of North and South Rockefeller.

Upperclassmen introduced us to Chanticleer cookies, the OTHER version of our Alma Mater, V-8 songs, and Amherst frats.  T-shirts and blue jeans were all we wore.  We frequented Wilbur to enjoy 25 cent cups of peppermint stick ice cream.

That spring streaking swept college campuses, including MHC.  Nixon resigned.  Amherst went co-ed.  Willits-Hallowell opened.

Junior year 29% of us left campus for academic experiences elsewhere.  Private phones in dorm rooms were replaced with hall pay phones.

The faculty abolished comps and, after much debate and controversy, they dropped the E-G-P grading system for a 5 point grading system.

We graduated as young women ready to conquer the world.  We return today to gain inspirations once again from our classmates and Mount Holyoke.
