Our speaker Catherine Milton ’64, who has written a soon-to-be-published book on the untold history of creating AmeriCorps, discuss her work in public service. As founder and director of the Haas Center for Public Service at Stanford University and special assistant to Stanford President Donald Kennedy, Miller helped form Campus Compact, a national coalition of university presidents that encourages students to participate in community service. Leaders of this group advocated for legislation promoting voluntarism nationwide and leading to passage of the National and Community Service Act of 1990. Adoption of the act resulted in the formation of the Commission on National and Community Service, which Miller led for 3 years before helping create and launch AmeriCorps. As you may be aware, over 1.2 million Americans have participated as AmeriCorps members in the past 30 years. This work is focused on education, health, public safety, and the environment and provides grants for members to use for postsecondary education. AmeriCorps is also focused on creating opportunities for people from different cultural backgrounds to work together in teams to improve communities.
