Alumae Association’s Algorithms Shape Our Social Media Experience

In this webinar, hosted by the Alumnae Association, Mary Fleischli ’93 explains how algorithms influence the misinformation and harassment we see on social media platforms. Fleischli asserts that, while some actions have been taken to address the negative side of social media, more can be done. She will discuss other actions that could be taken by social media companies, governments, and individuals. Attendees will leave this webinar with a greater understanding of actions that can be taken to improve their social media experience. 

Mary Fleischli ’93 is a data scientist who works for the University of Connecticut’s Institute for Collaboration on Health, Intervention, and Policy (InCHIP). She studies the association between racial discrimination and African Americans’ mental and physical health. Previously, she was an actuary and built predictive models to quantify insurance risk. She graduated from Mount Holyoke College in 1993 with a B.A. in mathematics and from the University of Connecticut in 2015 with a master’s degree in statistics.
