Emerging Infectious Diseases: What’s Next and Why?

October 26, 2021 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm EDT

Infectious diseases are emerging more frequently. There are many reasons for this, which are well-illustrated by SARS-CoV-1, MERS CoV, Zika, Ebola 2014-2016, and the current Ebola outbreak and COVID-19 pandemic. This webinar, hosted by the Alumnae Association and led by Dr. Elizabeth A. Talbot ’88, will explore lessons learned, lessons that need learning and some surprising ways to mitigate the impact of infectious diseases on the human race.

Dr. Elizabeth A. Talbot ’88  is an infectious diseases and tropical medicine trained internist, who has had extensive experience in international and domestic infectious disease control through outbreak investigation, clinical projects, research and consultation. She trained at Duke University and with the U.S. Epidemic Intelligence Service, during which she was stationed in Botswana, then the World Health Organization before joining Dartmouth College, where she is a professor of medicine in the Section of Infectious Diseases and International Health at the Geisel Medical School at Dartmouth. Since 2003, Dr. Talbot has been New Hampshire’s deputy state epidemiologist and is currently engaged in leadership for the state’s COVID-19 pandemic response. Her primary research interests are infectious disease diagnostics, especially for global tuberculosis control. She has published more than a hundred research projects, reviews and book chapters.
