What\u2019s its backstory?&nbsp;<\/h5>\n<p>This is my US family\u2019s favorite meal for holiday gatherings.&nbsp;&nbsp; My Grandma, Elsa Landquist, immigrated to New York from Sweden when she was a young child and she grew up in Brooklyn.&nbsp; This is the recipe passed around in the Swedish-American community in Brooklyn around 1900, using the ingredients that they could find easily.&nbsp; (Swedish recipes always call for ground pork). This is why I have named the recipe \u201cSwedish-American Meatballs.\u201d&nbsp; Thanks to the nutmeg you will find that they do have that authentic Swedish flavor!<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h5>Swedish-American Meatballs<\/h5>\n<p><em>Serves 6. Takes approx. 1.5 hours.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Ingredients:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1 lb. (approx. 500g) ground beef<\/li>\n<li>\u00bd&nbsp; cup&nbsp; (45 grams) bread crumbs<\/li>\n<li>1 tbsp (1 soup spoon) finely chopped parsley, and more parsley for garnish<\/li>\n<li>1 \u00bd tsp. (1 soup spoon) nutmeg<\/li>\n<li>1 egg<\/li>\n<li>1 tbsp (1 soup spoon) nutmeg<\/li>\n<li>2 tbsp (2 soup spoons) minced onion<\/li>\n<li>Salt, pepper to taste<\/li>\n<li>1-2 tbsp (1-2 soup spoons) cooking oil<\/li>\n<li>1 \u00bd cup (300ml) warm water<\/li>\n<li>2 bouillon cubes<\/li>\n<li>1 tbsp (1 soup spoon) sherry<\/li>\n<li>Small spoon of flour<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Instructions:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Set oven at 350\u00b0F (180\u00b0C)<\/p>\n<p>You will need a casserole dish with a cover.<\/p>\n<p>In a large bowl mix the beef, bread crumbs, parsley, nutmeg, onion, salt and pepper with a fork.&nbsp; Beat the egg and add it to the mixture.<\/p>\n<p>Form the mixture into small balls and saut\u00e9 them in a large frying pan in cooking oil until browned.&nbsp; Place the meat balls into the casserole dish.&nbsp; In a separate bowl, mix the bouillon cubes with the warm water and add the sherry.&nbsp;&nbsp; Add this liquid to the casserole dish and bake in oven, covered most of the time, for about 1 \u00bd hours.<\/p>\n<p>Before serving, make gravy in a saucepan using some of the drippings from the frying pan, adding a small amount of flour to thicken and then adding several spoonfuls of bouillon from the casserole.&nbsp; Pour this gravy over the meatballs. &nbsp;&nbsp;Sprinkle with parsley.<\/p>\n<p>Can be served either as a main dish with egg noodles, or as finger food on a buffet table (with toothpicks or small forks).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-559\" src=\"http:\/\/new.alumnae.mtholyoke.edu\/europe\/files\/2020\/05\/Swedish-American-Meatballs.jpg\" alt=\"Swedish American Meatballs\" width=\"667\" height=\"1000\" srcset=\"https:\/\/new.alumnae.mtholyoke.edu\/europe\/files\/2020\/05\/Swedish-American-Meatballs.jpg 667w, https:\/\/new.alumnae.mtholyoke.edu\/europe\/files\/2020\/05\/Swedish-American-Meatballs-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/new.alumnae.mtholyoke.edu\/europe\/files\/2020\/05\/Swedish-American-Meatballs-18x27.jpg 18w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 667px) 100vw, 667px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Source:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>My grandma\u2019s recipe card<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Name: Dorcy Erlandson Class Year: 1962 Country of Residence: France Why is this recipe great?
