What\u2019s its backstory?&nbsp;<\/h5>\n<p>My Grandmother used to make these \u2013 it became then my favorite cookies, my kids\u2019 favorite and now my grandchildren\u2019s favorite. It doesn\u2019t look nice, but sure tastes good! Happy eating.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h5>Chocolate Halfway Bars<\/h5>\n<p><em>Serves 12. Takes 10 minutes + 25 minutes baking<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Ingredients:<\/span><br \/>\n1 cup sifted all-purpose flour<br \/>\n1\/8 teaspoon salt<br \/>\n1\/8 teaspoon baking soda<br \/>\n\u00bd teaspoon baking powder<br \/>\n\u00bd cup soft shortening<br \/>\n\u00bc cup granulated sugar<br \/>\n\u00bc cup brown sugar, packed<br \/>\n1 egg, separated<br \/>\n1 \u00bd teaspoons vanilla extract<br \/>\n1 \u00bd teaspoons water<br \/>\n\u00bd cup semisweet chocolate chips (or broken-up candy bar)<br \/>\n\u00bd cup brown sugar, packed<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Instructions:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Preheat oven to 375\u00b0 and grease an8\u201d square pan (can line with parchment paper if you want!)<br \/>\nSift flour, salt, soda, and baking powder and set aside.<br \/>\nMix shortening with sugars until very light and fluffy. Add egg yolk, water, vanilla; mix well. Thoroughly mix in flour mixture.<br \/>\nPat into baking dish and top with chocolate chips.<\/p>\n<p>Beat egg white until stiff; gradually beat in \u00bd cup brown sugar. Spread over chocolate. Bake in prepared dish for 25 minutes or until done. The top will be golden. Cut into bars while warm.
