Transportation options for arrival at the KAB
From the main train station (Hauptbahnhof):
- A taxi ride is 10-15 minutes and costs about 20 Euros (with tip).
- Public transportation is quite easy, safe and convenient, takes 20-25 minutes and costs 3.40 EUR. From the main station, take subway (U-Bahn) U4/U5 to Odeonsplatz and switch to the U3 or U6 (towards Olympia Einkaufszentrum or Garching Forschungszentrum, respectively). Travel five stops to Münchner Freiheit; take exit F (or the elevator) to Feilitzschstrasse. Walk two short blocks and make a right onto Werneckstrasse for the KAB entrance there or three blocks and make a right to reach the main KAB entrance on Mandlstrasse.
From the airport:
- A taxi ride is about 35 minutes and costs about 100 EUR (with tip).
- Public transportation is quite easy, safe and convenient, takes an hour but only costs about 12 EUR:
- Go the regional train (S-Bahn) station (just a few minutes’ walk from Terminal 2, slightly longer from Terminal 1). Tickets must be purchased before descending to the platform. The train runs every 20 minutes, costs 11.90 EUR. Take the S8 towards Herrsching for 11 stops to Marienplatz and switch to subway (U-Bahn) line U3 or U6 (towards Fürstenried or Klinikum Groβhadern) for four stops to Münchner Freiheit; the ticket for the S-Bahn is still valid for the U-Bahn portion of your ride.
- Or take the airport shuttle bus (Lufthansa Express Bus). It runs every 20 minutes, and costs 12 EUR one-way or 19.30 EUR roundtrip. The trip is non-stop to Nordfriedhof. Switch there to subway (U-Bahn) line U6 (towards Klinikum Groβhadern). Travel two stops to Münchner Freiheit. Your subway ticket must be purchased separately as you enter the station.
- From the Münchner Freiheit subway stop, take exit F (or elevator) to Feilitzschstrasse. Walk two short blocks and make a right onto Werneckstrasse for the KAB entrance there or three blocks and make a right to reach the main KAB entrance on Mandlstrasse.
More about public transportation in Munich
- There are no turnstiles or systematic checks upon boarding but there are sporadic checks, so purchase the ticket that suits your travel needs.
- You can download the (MVV) MVGO App or use ticket machines marked MVG that can be found at all stations. The machines take credit cards and the display can be switched to English if needed. Fare depends on distance traveled. Rates below reflect current prices.
- If you’ll be using the transit system a few times, it makes sense to buy a stripe ticket (Streifenkarten) which costs 17 EUR for 10 stripes. One stripe can be used for up to 2 subway stops or 4 bus/tram stops, two stripes for anything more within the city (M zone), or seven stripes to/from the airport (M+5 zones). A ride from the airport to anywhere in the city using the stripe card costs you 11.90 EUR, with three stripes left for other rides. You can combine and use multiple stripe cards as needed. Be sure to fold the stripe card over to the number of stripes required for your trip and stamp it at the blue machines located just before or on the platform.
- Fare for a single ride from the airport to anywhere in the city is 13.60 EUR. A single ride within the city (e.g., from our symposium venue to dinner on Saturday evening) is 3.90 EUR.
- Day tickets are a cost-effective option if you take three or more trips during the course of a day. Within the city, a day ticket is 9.20 EUR. Including travel from/to the airport, the price is 15.50 EUR. Three-day tickets for unlimited travel within the city cost 34,90 EUR, or 54.90 for unlimited travel including from/to the airport.
- Group day tickets can be purchased for up to five people traveling together within the city for 39.90 EUR, including from/to the airport for 58.90 EUR.
- If you live in Germany and hold a DeutschlandTicket, you can travel on the Munich U-Bahn and S-Bahn at no extra cost.
