Griffin Talks on Racial Equity 8/13/20

Topic: Chester Children’s Chorus’ rendition of  “I still can’t breathe”

Once more, the ZoomMaster ( Trudy Levy) was impressed with the wealth of talent and experiences that our class contains. Ramona Pei, this session’s volunteer leader, introduced our classmate, Wendy Minor Emrich, as someone who has been involved with the Chorus and school for some time.  We then broke into 3 groups to discuss the lyrics. Each group was asked to record three points of discussion and one action item to be presented to the whole group. Some points brought back to the group were: Interrupting racism – speak up, Give time and money to organizations committed to change, and Review your library resources for augmentation.

At the end we discussed future sessions and had two possibilities.  There was an interest in talking with the chorus members to learn what they felt about the lyrics. Wendy agreed to make inquiries as to whether any of the students would be interested in talking with us about their feelings of performing the song. Also Lin Rankin volunteered to give a mini – workshop on a philosophy mind/personality that sounded very interesting and pertinent, so we happily accepted her offer. A more detailed description is at the end.

Attendees: Barbara Reed, Margarita Perez,Jana Evert, Beth McGregor, Jill Frew , Ramona Pei, Marilyn Kincaid, Julia Halvey, Carolyn Brewer, Lucy Anne Mckosky, Andrea Sununu, Wendy Emrich, Nell Clark, Jane Kennedy, Ellen, Gail Vivian, Lin Rankin, Bobbi Whiting, Janet Lingerman, Pat Cantor, Cassis Camman Susan Holdernes and Trudy Levy

For those who could not make it, you can find the recording here. Also for the attendees, I learn something new every time. It turns out the recording follows the host (ZoomMaster), who “peeked” into all three groups, so you can see a bit of each group’s discussion. Enjoy.

We have confirmed that for now our gatherings will be Third Thursdays at 11am PST (12pmMDT, 1pmCDT, 2pmEDT)

See you September 17, 2020, when Lin Rankin will offer a very brief introduction to the philosophy mind/personality that she believes undergirds Richard Schwartz’s Internal Family Systems approach to psychotherapy. “Dr. Schwartz noticed that the relationships among our internal parts mirror relationships in our external world at all levels. There is potential to gain a deeper, more accurate understanding of what is driving so much societal dysfunction and how to address it.”

“For example, we learn to make sense of the experience of being of two minds about something, being at war with ourself, being confused when we are “out of character,” feeling one way about ourselves with our parents and another with our children…and the list goes on.“

Linda A. Rankin, PhD; MSSW, LCSW. MAC

Lin suggests that attendees read the first two articles from Dr. Schwartz’s site – (www.IFS-Institute.com).

If anyone has another topic that they would like to discuss with other intelligent women send them my way.
