Griffin talk on Racial Equity Fourth meeting 10/15/20 Report
Application of the Internal Family Systems approach to the issue of racism

Attendees: Lin Rankin (lead), Barbara Reed, Jana Evert, Beth McGregor, Carolyn Brewer, Peggy Hath Halloway, Ellen Barr (Lindsey Jones), Joan Fischer, Kitty Jacobs, Joan Hochman,Marilyn Kincaid, Gillian Dale and Trudy Levy

Lin Rankin presented us with several new ideas of how to look at our feelings and reactions. The one I especially took away was that we are always surveying our surroundings for danger, as a survival mode, and thus when we see “others” we look for the differences to evaluate them as danger or not. That perception led me to start to try to look for similarities.  There were many more ideas than I can summarize.. Lin has prepared an amazing detailed handout which covers this information and of course there is the recording, to which I strongly urge you to watch. You may need to download the file to watch it. Next Month on Thursday November 19th, Beth McGregor will lead us in a discussion of the Mount Holyoke’s  Common Read Keynote with Nikole Hannah-Jones, staff writer at The New York Times Magazine and lead on The 1619 Project.

We will also discuss our future path and structure: how we can vary our schedule to allow more to attend and whether we should split into groups with slightly different focuses on studying this topic: working on ourselves (Therapy), studying the history, or finding projects which might impact the system.

If you want to join our Google discussion group you can email me at mhc1969web@gmail.com and I will send you an invite to join.
