{"id":4675,"date":"2021-03-16T20:48:10","date_gmt":"2021-03-17T00:48:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/new.alumnae.mtholyoke.edu\/1961\/?p=4675"},"modified":"2021-03-17T11:59:09","modified_gmt":"2021-03-17T15:59:09","slug":"statues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.alumnae.mtholyoke.edu\/1961\/statues\/","title":{"rendered":"Statues"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Written by Dottie Smith Mann&#8217;s daughter, Susan Mann, when addressing the Catawba county council in NC. &nbsp;March, 2021<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #444444;font-size: 16px\"><strong>Statues<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #444444;font-size: 16px\">Statues stand all over the South<br \/>\nStone and Metal and Concrete reminders<br \/>\nOf a war that was fought, and lost<br \/>\nOf a Confederacy that lived a mere 4 years<br \/>\nBut which still casts a shadow on our Nation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #444444;font-size: 16px\">They call it the War of Northern Aggression<br \/>\nAnd pretend that Slavery wasn\u2019t the reason.<br \/>\nAnd that slavery wasn\u2019t that bad,<br \/>\nAnd besides, it was all so long ago<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #444444;font-size: 16px\">But it was that bad, and worse.<br \/>\nRape, and beatings, and starvation.<br \/>\nTorture, and murder,<br \/>\nChildren sold away from family<br \/>\nPeople treated as animals, owned<br \/>\nJust another part of the economy<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #444444;font-size: 16px\">(If you have any imagination, any sense<br \/>\nOf empathy for others, please use it now)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #444444;font-size: 16px\">And so the War was fought, and many died.<br \/>\nBrother fought brother, families torn apart<br \/>\nA country divided<br \/>\nA war that laid a country to waste<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #444444;font-size: 16px\">But finally it was over<br \/>\nAnd General Lee, himself, spoke out<br \/>\nI think it wiser, he said<br \/>\nNot to keep open the sores of war<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #444444;font-size: 16px\">He wanted no statues<br \/>\nAnd no statues went up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #444444;font-size: 16px\">And then a wondrous thing happened!<br \/>\nIn Carolina, Black and white came together<br \/>\nAs a political power, to do good for all<br \/>\nThey rewrote the Constitution<br \/>\nHelped the children, and the widows, and the sick<br \/>\nAnd expanded voting rights<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #444444;font-size: 16px\"><em>&nbsp;
