{"id":3443,"date":"2017-03-14T16:03:53","date_gmt":"2017-03-14T20:03:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/new.alumnae.mtholyoke.edu\/1961\/?p=3443"},"modified":"2017-03-22T19:43:07","modified_gmt":"2017-03-22T23:43:07","slug":"2017-march-from-dee","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.alumnae.mtholyoke.edu\/1961\/2017-march-from-dee\/","title":{"rendered":"2017 March, from Dee"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Dee Abrahamse, March 2017<\/em><br \/>\n&nbsp;&#8230;I attended Literary Women, the Long Beach women authors festival &nbsp;&#8211; 800 women in the convention center&#8230; &nbsp;Books I liked are: &nbsp; Jill Leovy, of&nbsp;<strong><i>Ghettoside<\/i><\/strong>, a non-fiction book by an LA Times reporter &#8230;&nbsp;about the police who were determined to bring gang murders to justice, and support the terrified inhabitants of the neighborhood.&nbsp; Cathleen Schine&#8217;s book&nbsp;<i><strong>They May Not Mean to But They Do<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/i>is about aging, taking care of a spouse with dementia, and relations with adult children and their families, done with some Jewish humor and general warmth&nbsp;&#8230;&nbsp;and might be a good book group book: &nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cathleenschine.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.cathleenschine.com\/<\/a>&nbsp;. &nbsp; Mia Alvar is a young writer whose short stories about the Philippines and Filipinos living and working around the world &#8211; fascinating for information, and excellent writing &#8211; I realized I didn&#8217;t know much about the Philippines at all. . &nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/miaalvar.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/miaalvar.com\/<\/a>&nbsp; I also liked Nadia Hashimi&#8217;s book&nbsp;<i><strong>When the Moon is Low<\/strong>,&nbsp;<\/i>tracing and Afghan refugees family&#8217;s journey to Europe.
