{"id":1753,"date":"2014-03-17T18:17:39","date_gmt":"2014-03-17T22:17:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/new.alumnae.mtholyoke.edu\/1961\/?p=1753"},"modified":"2014-09-12T10:42:35","modified_gmt":"2014-09-12T14:42:35","slug":"the-time-of-our-singing-and-orfeo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.alumnae.mtholyoke.edu\/1961\/the-time-of-our-singing-and-orfeo\/","title":{"rendered":"Jane Shaw Dietrich"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>The Time of Our Singing<\/strong><\/em> by Richard Powers. \u00a0Review from Jane Shaw Dietrich:<\/p>\n<p>Richard Powers is one of my favorite authors, and I think I&#8217;ve read almost all of his often-very-long novels.\u00a0 That was one of my favorites.\u00a0 Some of them are a bit too intellectually dense and go off the deep end into true weirdness.\u00a0 But I&#8217;m currently reading his latest book,<strong><i> Orfeo<\/i><\/strong>, which just came out and is also about music; I like it immensely.\u00a0 The protagonist is an elderly composer (well, about our age) who wants to encode a piece of music into the DNA of a bacterium and is fleeing from an accusation of bioterrorism.\u00a0 Powers seems to like codes, but he doesn&#8217;t go into too much detail about it here, as he did in an earlier book,<i><strong> The Gold Bug Variation<\/strong>s<\/i>, which I must have read about 20 years ago.\u00a0 It&#8217;s also about music, and codes, as you might guess from the title.<\/p>\n<p>from Susan Rhodes Brown: \u00a0Regarding <em><strong>A Time of Our Singing<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0by Richard Powers, I am enthralled. This is a book in which every word counts &#8211; a real pleasure after flipping pages in <em><strong>The Goldfinch<\/strong><\/em>.
