{"id":1023,"date":"2013-07-22T16:08:01","date_gmt":"2013-07-22T20:08:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/new.alumnae.mtholyoke.edu\/1961\/?p=1023"},"modified":"2014-01-31T16:35:10","modified_gmt":"2014-01-31T20:35:10","slug":"poems","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/new.alumnae.mtholyoke.edu\/1961\/poems\/","title":{"rendered":"Poem"},"content":{"rendered":"<address><em><strong>Cardinal at My Window<\/strong>, by Dottie Smith Mann<\/em><\/address>\n<address>\u00a0<\/address>\n<address><span style=\"color: #333399\">Everyday he attacks his reflection in the glass<\/span><\/address>\n<address><span style=\"color: #333399\">For hours he pecks, pecks, pecks, pecks.<\/span><\/address>\n<address><span style=\"color: #333399\">I am saddened by the futility.<\/span><\/address>\n<address><span style=\"color: #333399\">And yet perhaps it is just what he needs<\/span><\/address>\n<address><span style=\"color: #333399\">Sharpens his beak. \u00a0Dulls his beak.<\/span><\/address>\n<address><span style=\"color: #333399\">Gets exercise. \u00a0Improves his eyesight.<\/span><\/address>\n<address><span style=\"color: #333399\">Avoids harmful aggression with other birds.<\/span><\/address>\n<address><span style=\"color: #333399\">Stays away from the nest where a brooding female<\/span><\/address>\n<address><span style=\"color: #333399\">has no room, or patience, for him.<\/span><\/address>\n<address><span style=\"color: #333399\">\u00a0<\/span><\/address>\n<address><span style=\"color: #333399\">He is not me<\/span><\/address>\n<address><span style=\"color: #333399\">Sadness about futility is my emotional reality, not his.<\/span><\/address>\n<address><span style=\"color: #333399\">Do I fear that I am banging my head against an uncaring reflective wall?<\/span><\/address>\n<address><span style=\"color: #333399\">Does it sadden me that I might be without insight into the reality of my condition?<\/span><\/address>\n<address><span style=\"color: #333399\">Does it pain me to hear his clicking metronome of dailiness<\/span><\/address>\n<address><span style=\"color: #333399\">while I listen to my heartbeat<\/span><\/address>\n<address><span style=\"color: #333399\">and my husband&#8217;s<\/span><\/address>\n<address><span style=\"color: #333399\">waiting to hear it stop.<\/span><\/address>\n<address>\u00a0<\/address>\n<hr \/>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cardinal at My Window, by Dottie Smith Mann \u00a0 Everyday he attacks his reflection in the glass For hours he pecks, pecks, pecks, pecks.
