{"id":4497,"date":"2020-10-25T16:52:11","date_gmt":"2020-10-25T20:52:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/new.alumnae.mtholyoke.edu\/1961\/?page_id=4497"},"modified":"2021-05-05T12:48:52","modified_gmt":"2021-05-05T16:48:52","slug":"part-6-may-28-jun-3-20","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/new.alumnae.mtholyoke.edu\/1961\/part-6-may-28-jun-3-20\/","title":{"rendered":"Part 6: May 28 &#8211; Jun 3, &#8217;20"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><strong><em><span style=\"color: #444444;font-size: 16px\">5\/18 &#8211; 6\/3\/20 <\/span><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><em><span style=\"color: #444444;font-size: 16px\">5\/28\/20. &nbsp;Thursday. &nbsp;As I start Part 6 of this compilation during the pandemic, I should mention that we are now living in an even more uncertain period of our lives. &nbsp;We have been writing about the way our lives are being affected over the past two to three months, but now we realize that this will be a long-lasting part of our lives. &nbsp;We have been living in relative isolation for three months.<br \/>\n* &nbsp;100,000 American have lost their lives.<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #444444;font-size: 16px\">* &nbsp;Our President has no compassion, shows little concern for our sick and dying, is concerned only with the economy, and has provided absolutely no leadership for getting through all of this. &nbsp;<br \/>\n* &nbsp;No scientists have yet determined that there will ever be a vaccine for this virus, although one is predicted possibly in a year or so.<br \/>\n* &nbsp;There is hope that there will be the discovery of some remedial medication to assist those with a severe case of the virus &nbsp;&#8212; sometime during this search for a vaccine.<br \/>\n* &nbsp;Today, from the New York Times: &nbsp;&#8220;The Fall of Autumn: &nbsp;Live Performance Producers Are Giving Up on 2020,&#8221; and we&#8217;re not half through the year. &nbsp;So our lives are on a temporary but sort of permanent hold.<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<em><span style=\"color: #444444;font-size: 16px\">* AND today (Thursday) the NASA SpaceX launch is scheduled for 1:00 &#8212; exciting times. &nbsp;(<\/span><\/em><span style=\"color: #444444;font-size: 16px\">Ed. note: &nbsp;Delayed because of weather, and then a successful launch on Saturday.<\/span><em><span style=\"color: #444444;font-size: 16px\">)<\/span><\/em><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #444444;font-size: 16px\"><em>* AND on Monday for the first time we all watched the video of a police officer in Minneapolis killing a handcuffed man by squeezing the life from him with his knee pressed on his throat. &nbsp;What is happening to our country? &nbsp;As if the pandemic isn&#8217;t disturbing enough.<\/em><br \/>\n<strong>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Now back to our emails which begin 10 days ago:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #444444;font-size: 16px\">5\/18\/20 &#8212; &nbsp;It helps to start off with a laugh. &nbsp;<strong>Kim Holmquist<\/strong>&nbsp;sent this a couple of weeks ago, with the comment, &#8220;Thought these were pretty funny! &nbsp;Enjoy!&#8221; &nbsp;It can &nbsp;also be found in the &nbsp;&#8220;Take Time to Laugh&#8221; section.<\/span><\/p>\n<div><strong>New monthly budget: Gas $0, Entertainment $0, Clothes $0, Groceries $2,799.<\/strong><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #008000\"><strong>Breaking News: Wearing a mask inside your home is now highly recommended. Not so much to stop COVID-19, but to stop eating.<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #800080\"><strong>We low-maintenance chicks are having our moment right now. We don&#8217;t have nails to fill and paint, roots to dye, eyelashes to re-mink, and are thrilled not to have to get dressed every day. I have been training for this moment my entire life!<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div><strong>When this quarantine is over, let&#8217;s not tell some people.<\/strong><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #ffcc00\"><strong>I stepped on my scale this morning. It said: &#8220;Please practice social distancing. Only one person at a time on the scale.&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #333300\"><strong>Not to brag, but I haven&#8217;t been late to anything in over 8 weeks.<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #339966\"><strong>It may take a village to raise a child, but I swear its going to take a vineyard to home school one.<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div><strong>You know those car commercials where there&#8217;s only vehicle on the road? Doesn&#8217;t seem so unrealistic these days.<\/strong><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>They may open things up next month &#8212; I&#8217;m staying in until July to see what happens to you all first.<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div><strong>Day 56: The garbage man placed an AA flyer on my recycling bin.<\/strong><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #800000\"><strong>Appropriate analogy: &#8220;The curve is flattening, so we can start lifting restrictions now.&#8221; Or could it be&#8230;.. &nbsp;pretty funny &#8220;The parachute has slowed our rate of descent, so we can take it off now.&#8221;<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div><strong>People keep asking: &#8220;Is coronavirus REALLY all that serious?&#8221; Listen y&#8217;all, the churches and casinos are closed. When heaven and hell agree on the same thing, it&#8217;s probably pretty serious.<\/strong><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #0000ff\"><strong>Never in a million years could I have imagined I would go up to a bank teller wearing a mask and ask for money.<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div><strong>I am home schooling. The first day I tried to get this kid transferred out of my class.<\/strong><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #ff6600\"><strong>Putting a drink in each room of my house today and calling it a pub crawl.<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div><strong>Okay, so the schools are closed. Do we drop the kids off at the teacher&#8217;s house?<\/strong><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #993300\"><strong>For the second part of this quarantine do we have to stay with the same family or will they relocate us? Asking for myself&#8230;.<\/strong><\/span><\/div>\n<div><strong>And the best one: I was in a long line at 7:45 am today at the grocery store that opened at 8:00 for seniors only. A young man came from the parking lot and tried to cut in at the front of the line, but an old lady beat him back into the parking lot with her cane. He returned and tried to cut in again, but an old man punched him in the gut, then kicked him to the ground and rolled him away. As he approached the line for the 3rd time he said, &#8220;If you people don&#8217;t let me unlock the door, none of you will ever get in to shop.<span style=\"font-size: small\">&#8220;<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #444444;font-size: 16px\"><br \/>\n5\/18\/20 &#8212;<br \/>\n* These are wonderful!&nbsp; <strong>Marian Moore<\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #444444\">* Truly WONDERFUL! &nbsp;Yes, my dreams are quite different! &nbsp;I seem to remember them better, and there is a strange mixture of friends who wouldn\u2019t know each other but act as though they do. &nbsp;I gather this is a reaction to our stress but I too would be interested in hearing from Kathy on the subject. &nbsp;I agree. &nbsp;It is quite nice to \u201cvisit \u201c with them again! Humor from one friend, Caring from another, deep thought from another. &nbsp;And the ability to be silly, now there\u2019s a great one!! &nbsp;And to make lemonade out of lemons. Sitting around a dorm room at the end of the day solving mysteries of the universe. Or helping one of us get through a breakup or a bad grade.&nbsp;<br \/>\n&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Maybe it\u2019s mostly that we\u2019re not alone. I was attributing them to age. I might forget what I did&nbsp;yesterday, but have a vivid memory of an event in college. When I was doing community nursing, I can remember some patients relating events from their twenties who could not remember who I was from one visit to the next. Recently, I started putting a small pillow under my thigh after I hurt my sciatic nerve. Voila! don&#8217;t think they just wanted Lafayette Park &#8220;cleared&#8221; so the President of the US could safely walk across it to the church he never goes to for a quick photo op with a Bible.&nbsp; That makes no sense to me.&nbsp; I think that as CNN journalist Don Lemon promptly said on air, the whole thing from beginning to end was a carefully orchestrated &#8220;reality show&#8221; for the sake of the media who were already filming there nonstop live video of what was happening , i.e.they deliberately left the peaceful protestors alone to do their thing until the very last minute (with planned intent of showing what &nbsp;the &#8220;dominating and scary force&#8221; demanded of the governors in the morning conference call should look like, backed up by a very visible and horrifying phalanx of armed men on horseback from one edge of the street to the other to move and push and take back this tiny plot of &#8220;federal land ,&#8221; so that &#8220;the General&#8221; could then come out of his safe house surrounded by his aides to savor victory, show off his &#8220;courage and strength,&#8221; and most important of all &#8212; make the connection that his judgement and actions are &#8220;Godgiven&#8221; as so much of the Evangelical community has come to believe.&nbsp; All that was missing were the &#8220;vicious dogs&#8221; of the 1960s.<\/span><br \/>\n&nbsp;
