Inter-Class Friendships

It has been such fun to interact with Mount Holyoke alumnae from other classes. How many of us have developed inter-class friendships? Please share your experiences with inter-class friendships by emailing your web coordinator, and I will post them here.

Inspired by Nancy Floyd Bireley, Ann Kingman Williams and Belle Hart Traver (’48) hosted an inter-generational MHC Luncheon at The Highlands, in Topsham, Maine, on May 28, 2019. We numbered seven, all from either the neighboring town of Brunswick, or Topsham. {My husband quipped “Ah, the seven sisters…”). Guests included Jan Herridge Keffer and Kate Bracher, Paula Whitney Wood (’61), Lisa Durrell (’68) and Harriet Gray (Masters ’64). We could have talked all afternoon! Great fun.

Nancy Floyd Bireley has sent several pictures documenting a special friendship with a member of the class of 1943. Nancy writes: “Wednesday, April 24th we celebrated her 98th birthday with Pat Ryan Leopold (Class of 1943) myself and Anne Vittoria (Frances Perkins scholar..forget which class she was). The other young gal is working with Anne at MHC fund raising office. It was a delightful afternoon and such fun to have the MHC connection down through the years. Pat is amazingly spry despite having had a broken leg and carotid artery surgery both in the past several years. She’s an inspiration for all of us !”

And last summer, Nance and Pat met at the National Zoo. Nance writes: “Here is a picture of me with Pat Ryan Leopold MHC ’43 at the National Zoo last fall…she is amazing at 97! I’m really privileged to have her in my life. Who knew back in 1960 that the Mt. Holyoke connection would reach that far back?”

I (Ann Kingman Williams) have made quite a few MHC friends since we moved to The Highlands, in MidCoast Maine over 5 years ago. In our retirement community I am one of three MHC graduates, with one being Jan Herridge Keffer! Others are Paula Whitney Wood, ’61 and Belle Traver ’48. Interestingly enough, Belle was a Zoology major, as was I, and despite graduating twelve years apart, we had several of the same professors, Christianna Smith Elizabeth Adams, Elizabeth Boyd among them! Another MHC friend from the class of ’68 is Michaelanne (‘Mike’) Magrane Rosenzweig, whom I met several years ago at our Mountain Day celebration. Photos to follow.
