Letters from the Class President

Update from Alumnae Council, October 2008

It was a wonderful fall weekend in South Hadley.  Maureen Kuhn, Beth Marks Cortright, Jaci Jones LaMon, and Laurie Soojian Woo attended training for Class Officers.  It was filled with helpful presentations and typical MHC food, including milk & cookies!

Most of our time was spent trying to re-capture the energy from our 30th Reunion in late May, and then to continue to ride that wave over the next 5 years.  Our primary goal is to improve communication amongst ourselves by using email, our class web pages, and mini-gatherings around the country.

We are eager to hear from anyone who would like to help coordinate gatherings in your geographic area, or any activity, to increase class participation and camaraderie with both old and new ’78-er friends.

Feel free to contact any of us (see Class Officers tab) at any time!

Here’s the January 2007 class letter from President Maureen Kuhn:

Dear Classmates,

Wow! It is hard to believe that most of us have turned 50 this year! I just don’t know where the time has gone. It seems like it was just yesterday that we were gathering for our 25th Reunion. I have been back to campus many times since that wonderful gathering.

The State of the College is very strong. The campus looks wonderful. There have been a record number of application and acceptances this year. The young women I have met are very bright and enthusiastic. The diversity of student backgrounds and cultures is a very strong presence across campus. The international students are an amazing group of young woman.

MHC is very competitive in attracting the brightest and the best of young professors. This spring I had the pleasure of going to faculty show. Some things have not changed. The wit and humor of the faculty had us rolling in the aisles. The Weissman Center along with the recently dedicated Center for Global Initiatives has brought incredible speakers to campus. A great example of the Center for Global Initiatives was the recent panel of experts discussing the issues in the Middle East. Hooker, which was recently refurbished, was packed with lively discussion.

The College has just kicked off a $300 million Capital campaign. Part of the plan will include a new dorm, hopefully ready for our 30th reunion. It will be down by Pratt. It is beautiful and will fit in nicely with the College architecture. This will allow the college to upgrade other dorms. Our Class Gift will be part of the Campaign so please consider helping us meet our goal of $90,000.

Where does the time go?? It is time to start planning our 30th reunion for 2008. Several of us recently returned from a Reunion Planning event. Patrice McCarthy Kirshbaum and Lois Feibel Meerwald have graciously agreed to be Reunion Co-Chairs. Nancy Rosoff and Laura Woo have agreed to keep our web page up to date. Nancy will also be chairing the Nominating committee.

These wonderful women will need help. So in between juggling job, families and aging parents think about how you might want to assist the great class of 1978. It is always a great time. Stay tuned over the next few months for updates on class and reunion activities. Our class web page can be accessed through the classes and reunion section of the Association? web page.

I want to take this opportunity to wish all of you a very healthy 2007. Life is moving faster than most of us would like so hopefully you can take some time out for friends and family.
