Text: Marlane C. Dove, 69, of Jackson, Mississippi, passed away on June 3,
2017 at Hospice Ministry in Ridgeland.

Marlane Dove was born March 21, 1948, and was predeceased by her
parents, Bernard W. N. Chill, Sr. and Lilyan R. Chill. She is
survived by her husband of 43 years, Luke, and their son,
Christopher. She is also survived by her aunt, Virginia Agnone, her
brother, Bernie Chill and wife, Ginger, and a legion of devoted
friends.

Marlane was an honor graduate of Mount Holyoke College, South Hadley,
Massachusetts, where she acquired her love of English history and
literature. She was also an honor graduate of The University of
Mississippi School of Law and served on the law journal. Marlane
practiced law in Jackson for almost 40 years, specializing in
bankruptcy law and estate matters. She was dedicated to her clients
and never much concerned about a fee. Marlane helped many families
cope with unexpected financial difficulties and took much pride in
helping clients with matters which were routine to her but of great
importance in their lives including adoptions, guardianships wills
and deeds.

Marlane had a wealth of friends who loved and cherished her. She was
always there to offer love, support and comfort. With the love,
support and comfort of these same friends, her final days were
remarkably good.

Marlane’s family would like to offer special and heartfelt thanks to
the dedicated staff, nurses and doctors at the surgical ICU unit of
the Mississippi Baptist Hospital. Their efforts on Marlane’s behalf
were unceasing and reflected the highest professional standards. The
family also offers genuine and lasting gratitude to Ruby Lewis, a
long-time friend and helpmate, and to the caring and loving
congregation of Northminster Baptist Church.

Marlane loved to travel and visit beautiful towns such as Montalcino,
Italy and Bariloche, Argentina. She loved to visit gardens and was
particularly fond of the Gardens of Monet in Giverny, France and the
gardens and grounds of the Bally Fin estate in Ireland. She once
walked among the flowers at Bally Fin after a rain shower and
witnessed a magnificent double rainbow arching through the sky down
to the emerald hills. She reached for the hand of her husband and
watched in grateful silence. Marlane truly loved flowers and would
create beautiful arrangements from her own cuttings and shared them
with friends.

Marlane was a wonderful hostess. She also served as president of the
Alliance Francaise in Jackson and the Mississippi Opera Guild. She
even eventually learned to enjoy flying and traveling with her
husband in a small airplane, especially after he acquired an airplane
with a built-in parachute.

Marlane was an elegant and beautiful person; a loving wife and
mother. She was greatly loved in return. May her soul rest in eternal
peace in the presence of God.

A private graveside service will be held at Parkway Cemetery on
Friday, July 7 at 10 a.m. followed by a visitation at 11 am and a
Memorial Service at noon at Northminster Baptist Church.

In lieu of flowers, Marlane’s family asks that her friends consider
sending a remembrance to the Pastors Benevolent Fund, Northminster
Baptist Church, 3955 Ridgewood Road, Jackson, Mississippi 39211.

Ida,

Hello, hello. I am resurfacing at the behest of the Reunion Committee. They hope that you can put the following in the next Quarterly.

“Jane McMahon Kennedy (a member of Reunion’s Participation Committee) writes, ‘Let’s get out our quill pens and sealing wax (or laptops and smartphones!) and contact friends with whom we have been long out of contact. Let’s Google and sleuth to track down long-lost classmates. We want all 69ers to attend Reunion 2019.'”

Do you think this is OK?

I hope we can all get together this year. We are in the midst of putting our house back together after we had the living room, dining room, loft, and two hallways painted. They had not been painted since the house was built in 1969–ironic since that is our graduation year.

We are basically well although Emmet’s Parkinson’s has progressed somewhat but not alarmingly. How are you and yours?

Hi Ida,

Although it is for the next Alumnae Quarterly Class News (summer),  I just wanted to let you know about a mini-reunion that I recently had with classmates in Swarthmore, PA.

It’s been great fun visiting Nell Preston Clark who recently moved from Brooklyn, NY to Swarthmore, PA. Carolyn Brewer and I took a road trip from Boston and spent three days there having a mini-reunion and celebrating (and pre-celebrating) our 70th birthdays!! We hope to catch up with other classmates at our 50th MHC reunion in 2019.

I am very sad to report that I lost both my mother and my husband in a matter of two weeks in late December /early January. My husband of 22 years, Richard H. Bills, was quite a character and I am seriously considering writing a book titled, My Life with Dick.  I am thankful that we had several years of joint retirement together.  I have now gone to work at Kangaroo Products.  Can you believe that someone hired a 69 year old to do financial analysis.

Hi Ida, This is Linda Baehler Fredericks, MHC Class of 1969.  I currently reside in the San Francisco Bay Area, and I do have some news here for the Alumnae Quarterly. I retired from 30+ years of government social work in August of 2015 and immediately jumped into a local Memoirs Writing Workshop. On June 10, 2017, I won a Third Place Ribbon at the San Mateo County Fair, in the Literary Division, Memoirs Department, for an essay about my exploits in Kindergarten (yes, I can still remember that far back!). It is entitled “The Kindergarten Slammer.” My essay was included in a compilation of all the winners’ works, entitled Carry the Light, Winning Short Stories, Poems and Essays from the San Mateo County Fair, 2017, published by San Hill Review Press. Wow, at age seventy I am now a published author! I got a kick out of that.

Further exciting news is that my eldest daughter, Melaina, while on a two year tour of duty in Korea, was promoted to Colonel in the US Army, Nurse Corps Administration. She was just transferred back to Washington D.C. where she will work as Assistant to a Three Star General in the Army Congressional Liaison Office.

Hello Ida, Since I’ve tossed my last alum quarterly, I’m hoping that you are the right person to send a note to?  Please let me know if it’s too long or needs editing!  (Not sure my description of the connection is enough)

Thanks to the 50th connection with 2019 students, I’ve had the good fortune to email and meet Ruth from Ethiopia.  As a result, we were thrilled to attend the annual African and Caribbean Day dinner and dance performance.  Twelve groups of students from different countries choreographed their own dances which powerfully and dynamically represented both resistance and celebration.  Recently, Ruth spent the night here and was glad to visit our son-in-law’s architecture office.  Did you know that MHC has architecture/urban planning courses now?  I would encourage ’69 ers to sign up for a 2019 pen pal as it’s been a great way to connect with MHC and a younger soul.

A reminder to all you ’69ers who live not too far from campus–

You’re invited by the Class of 2019 to participate in their ‘Ring and Rose’ ceremony and reception on Thursday, April 6th in Chapin Auditorium. This relatively new tradition honors getting near the halfway point in their MHC education; everyone gets dressed up and comes to receive their class rings (if they ordered them) and roses (everyone) from members of the 50-year Connections class (us). There are a couple of speeches, including one from our esteemed class president Marilyn and one from a member of the Class of 2015. Then we all break for dessert and socializing.

About 6 or 7 of us are already planning to come, and the more the merrier.  We’ll no doubt take the opportunity to hang out together a bit (a mini ‘Cafe ’69?) after the event, and some of us are staying overnight.  As of yesterday there were still a couple of rooms available at Willits ($110 including breakfast) for anyone not wanting to drive back home the same night.

If you’re interested in joining us, please let me know.
